Just get as much documentation as you can, so that ten years from now when you can't remember how old he is, you can check and confirm his birthdate. We have two geldings, and our daughter has one, with registration papers that haven't been transferred through several owners. If they come to me with current papers, I do transfer them to keep a nice paper trail going, but with the others, I just keep a file folder on them with the registration papers or photocopies of the papers.
