My first Arabian had had a couple of less than skilled owners who wanted him to be a western pleasure show horse. The result was that he had a real fear of the curb bit he had been "punished" with.The switch to a snaffle cured that. He had been punished so often for extending his trot, that when I would encouraged him to extend, he would move a couple of paces, then toss his head and slow down. This was all with no bit contact at all! It took me about a month to teach him it was OK to extend the trot.
