Re: [RC] BBC E-mail: Champion endurance horse cloned - John TeeterVal happens to be here in Argentina:) She is very pleased. Cloning is not easy at all and this one was no exception she said. Also, while competition would be interesting, the primary reason for doing the clone was to get a start at a bloodline - i.e. breeding champions. She mentioned that in our sport, it is most common that gelding happens before a proven endurance champion emerges. This was a way to get the breeding line of Cash back! At any rate, it (cloning) is a very difficult process and one that is still very experimental in most species. It will be very interesting to see you it evolves in this particular sport where being a registered Arabian is really secondary to being an champion! It's too bad Rio just passed away ... it would be ... no I don't want to go there yet:) johnt (from the heart of the Pan Americans where everyone who is riding is heading to a prolonged siesta!!) Didn't they find that the cloned offspring of Dolly the sheep aged quickly? A clone is an identical twin. Identical twins generally have a lot in common -- and a lot that's absolutely not the same, including talents, skills, and frequently even looks!! And then there's the nurture part of the equation. Nature's influence is pretty much set at conception. After that it's environment and experience. This horse will, I assume, have all the best endurance-specific experiences from birth, but that still doesn't mean, in the end, he'll be one whit better than any other individual. I'd hate to think how much they paid for him! Melissa =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
