Re: [RC] AHA Trail Ride - don't think I'll go... - Laney HumphreyHere's another point of view:Those of us who ride Arabians in distance sports should make the most of opportunties such as this to show folks coming from the show ring what our Arabians can do out on the trail. We should attend events like this, go at their pace but feed, water and otherwise take care of our horses "our" way. And do this in such a way as to educate and enlighten folks as to other ways of being with their horses. If they are going to make a big effort to try something new, we should make an effort to show them that it is fun, doable, and not strangled with rules and regs like the show arena is. Years ago I did a 5 day trail ride run by a pretty traditional trail riding organization. The trail boss told us how we should take care of our horses before it began. Same kind of outmoded, not appropriate myths such as limit water, wait hours to let the horses eat after we'd gotten in for the night, etc. Those of us who had done endurance, etc. asked if we could please take care of our horses the way we were used to and after hemming and hawing a lot, he allowed us to. Other people were amazed to see how well it worked for our horses! I'm in California and can't get back to Nebraska but hopefully some distance riders will make the effort to support the AHA and our wonderful Arabian horses. Laney Chris Paus wrote: Ditto. Plus I can't spend $300 for a pleasure trail ride that wont' be a pleasure! I'd much rather put the money toward endurance or CTR and work toward some goals while I'm riding. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
