Re: [RC] [RC-Digest] Vol: 03.2517 - Zephyr Arabians

It has been my hope in trying to educate about
breeding, conformation,
biomechanics, and metabolic heritability that people
would be able to cut
the sifting process short by going straight to the
sources of horses that
have continued to be bred for these traits.

This is a very important point Heidi makes. If people
don't buy the production of those breeders who breed
for endurance & other athletic endeavors (in any
breed, not just Arabians), those breeders will
eventually stop breeding -- because they give up the
fight, because of finances, or just because they grow
to old to continue to breed and no one picks up their
program. And, when that happens, the only horses
available will be the show-ring regects which will
often lack the very traits that endurance riders are
looking for in their mounts.

I realize lots of riders continue to think "pedigree
doesn't matter," but what goes into that horse you're
riding is his/her ancestors and the selection choices
made by his/her breeder and the breeders who came
before them. (Or by the harsh reality of life in the
case of mustangs.) If the breeders who care about
athletic qualities stop breeding, then finding horses
with athletic qualities really will be a crap shoot.

I get about a good year or longer on my Roper
Horseshoes, athletic =
style. I wear them most of the time, but NOT in the
mud....that's what =
my Muck boots are for.

And on a completely different topic, I also ride in
Roper Horseshoes and have gotten several years out of
the pair I have. :)

Amen to that, HEidi - has anyone ELSE been just
appalled by the full page ad
in AHW that tells us that "this horse paid for my
daughter's college
education" or something like that? sigh! And we just
want to ride sound horses.
s

In what felt like a terrifying move to me at the time,
I actually stopped subscribing to AHW several years
ago. I can remember when everything would just stop
for me when my issue would arrive: I'd sit down and
spend hours pouring over every page. But, eventually
the magazine started making me angry whenever I'd open
it's pages. I finally realized I had to stop looking,
as the anger and disgust just wasn't healthy. I
haven't missed it one little bit. And, now it sounds
like nothing has changed. :(

Sorry, Mary Ann
Now that makes much more sense :-) Although when a
breeder has a terrific horse that they have put as
much training into as required for endurance, that
figure does not seem so outrageous when you figure
the hourly wage.

You don't even have to take into consideration the
hourly wage. Just the actual cash-flow out can easily
reach "megabucks" by the time a foal hits the ground,
let alone riding age. That's why those of us who
continue to breed do it for love, not money.

I am sooo sorry I neglected to mention you, Claudia.
I simply haven't seen your name for awhile.

I got skipped too. But, as I haven't been posting much
lately and also haven't had a foal available in years,
I will forgive you. <g>
