Re: [RC] Arabian numbers - heidiIn response to:"The year 1990 is an interesting time frame since that was close to the year the IRS changes the status of deductions for horses - which had a huge impact of the Arab industry. " Actually the year was 1987 when the IRS changed the rules to only allow those who were "active" participants instead of "passive" participants. The IRS also started actively going after those who had a Schedule C enterprise relating to horses. It dropped the bottom out of the Arabian market. But it was probably the best thing that ever happened to the Arabian in the long run, since it cut short the artificial investor schemes that were going on. The backlash, though, is trying to absorb all of those cull horses... The other interesting part of the AHA statement was: One chart reflected that 75 percent of our horses are 16 years or older, telling us that people are not breeding. Very true. And registration numbers continue to decline. Again, I think that this is a good thing for the time being, as it weeds out the megafoal producers (I hesitate to call them "breeders") as well as the wannabes who are just breeding famous names in pedigrees in hopes of catching a corner of the glitz and fame. AHA's research also shows that distance riding is now the #1 competitive use for Arabians--we have surpassed Class A shows. And I think that is a good trend. Likewise, open shows are neck and neck with Class A shows--and those competing in open shows are largely competing in various sport horse events, which is also a healthy sign. Sadly, the AHA judging at Class A shows has not gotten appreciably better--and as long as they put such caricatures and extremes on the marquee, so to speak, people will still try to breed for those traits. And that is counterproductive to trying to breed useful horses, as well as for regaining the public image of the Arabian as a rideable family horse.
