The mouse and keyboarding are very static
activities that reduce the circulation into the hand. That causes decreased
vascualrity in the carpal tunnel and to the hand. The electronic vibrations
from those tools also cause histamine release in the hand that results in
swelling and pressure in the carpal tunnel injuring the nerve in particular. We
tell people to take breaks every 20-30 minutes and do tendon gliding exercises
(open/close your hand for a minute or so) or get up and just do something that
makes your hand and fingers move. This counteracts the risk factor.
The splint for night wear is means of
keeping the wrist straight to avoid cutting off circulation to the hand when the
wrist is bent. The wrist is much like a garden hose, when you bend or put a kink
in it, the blood flow decreases and numbness results. Splints are a great way to
ensure good blood flow all night long.

RIDECAMP Subject: Re: [RC] [RC] Carpel Tunnel
My husband has had carpel off and on and
had it really bad a few years ago. He works on computer and "mouses" all day
long--graphic design. He puts a wrist brace on at night to sleep with. His
carpel would then repair with his wrist STRAIGHT (with brace) instead of bent
like most people sleep. This is the same principal in using a soft boot to
help repair plantar fascititis while sleeping. You need to repair/rest the
wrist in the best position otherwise it will repair itself in the wrong
position and hurt when you use it the next day. It REALLY helped his carpel
and he rarely has problems now, so you may try that.
