Even the expensive survey units will no see the signal in heavy trees all the time. If you are only looking for time transfer and location you can sit in a spot long enough that usually as the satellites move you will find a favorable geometry and get a reading. However, if you are looking for suitable geometry for signal reception all the time in foliage - which is require for such things as speed and trail distance estimation you will be disappointed.
