Re: [RC] 'Easy' mare <rated pg-13> - heidiSo, I'd love to hear some feedback on this: are mares more likely to go into heat at rides? No. They cycle every 21 days, and are in heat for anywhere from a day or so to a week prior to each ovulation, with the duration of the standing heat tending to get shorter as summer goes on. However, you may not NOTICE her in heat at home, and the social stimulation may make her more apt to show behavioral changes. And, if so, is Regumate the answer--or does exposure/experience help? Or what else? I prefer exposure/experience, and although Regumate is now allowed under AERC rules, I don't like to see it used. Some mares have real issues with heat cycles, but most mares can be trained to ignore their hormones, just as stallions can be.
