If this mare is an older horse that you have had for some time, I think it
reasonable to assume that you have been calling her something.

Why don't you just "name" her what you call her?  It is perfectly
acceptable to register a horse with the name that you are actually going to
use :).  And unless the name is already taken, there is absolutely no
reason not to.
