[RC] Pentosan Polysulphate - Patti KuvikI have checked with my orthopods colleagues in my hospital whether it is used in human and no one seem to know.Maybe it come under adifferent name. Perhaps because you should have checked with your urologist colleagues - pentosan polysulfate sodium is a low-molecular weight heparinoid, an "orphan drug" used in human )and feline) medicine to treat pain in interstitial cystitis (trade name Elmiron). It looks like it is marketed in Austrailia and Europe as Cartrophen Vet to treat osteoarthritis in canines. http://www.arthritis.au.com/htm/vet_01.htm Australian study on use/safety of Cartrophen Vet in horses showed elevation of PTT - http://www.arthritis.au.com/horse/hrs_01.htm "Based on the results of this study, it appears that doses of up to 3mg/kg PPS in the horse are safe and that PPS should not be administered to patients within 24 hrs of high stress activities or where physical injury may possibly be sustained, such as in show jumping. It is also evident that Warfarin or other anti-coagulant agents should not be used concurrently with pentosan polysulphate therapy." I found one discussion (and some other mentions) of pentosan polysulfate at IVIS http://www.ivis.org:8765/query.html?col=aenglish&qt=+pentosan+polysulfate&charset=iso-8859-1 and there are 28 pages of references to pentosan polysulfate in PubMed.
