Re: [RC] Some Thoughts on Pacing (Part 1) - rides2farI agree. Sand is better than clay and mud. You don't have the suction with> sand that you do with mud. I train on regular terrain and sand terrain. I> LOVE the Florida rides. I *wish* I could train for a Florida ride. :-P I have one option...there's a dressage arena 5 miles from here that has a heavy sand surface. She charges outsiders $10 per day per horse to use it. I guess that's cheaper than going all the way to Florida to train. Wonder if she'd be mad if I rode round and round for 5 hrs. to get my moneys worth.>g< I think the problem with going down to FLA for a week to train is that I want to stress the horse, then give him recovery time to rebuild the damage before I stress him again. I wouldn't want to ride in it several days straight. Marilyn Horstmayer used to have a roundpen with sand that she lunged her horse around in for training but I don't have that. I think I'd probably have to haul at *least* 4 hrs. to find a sandy traill. That said, Liberty Run in Augusta is one of Kaboot's favorite courses where he's done some of his best rides. He did his fastest 100 there...but found out next day he'd strained his suspensory. I've sometimes wondered if he would have been a great sand horse if he'd been owned by someone who trained in it. He *did* have those big ol' feet that don't sink easy. :-) Angie =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
