RE: [RC] Graniteville train wreck. - Laurie UnderwoodHi Steven: I'm the original poster for this since I live in the area. I believe the reason that they haven't actually reported on the number of critters who perished in this accident is that they cannot get in to check. Flyovers have revealed numerous pets dead in backyards, but last I heard (and I haven't logged on in a couple of hours) is that they were still trying to patch the ruptured tanker and had not been able to check surrounding homes and the mills. The cause of at least three of the deaths is exposure to chlorine gas. Two of the men killed went back into the mill to find one of their coworkers. The man they sought is still missing as well. I believe the conductor and/or the engineer of the moving train were killed by the impact. The only good news I can see in this is that according to Ed (and he should know!) there should be no long-term effects. One life lost is one too many, be it human or animal. Hi All: The news states that 8 people died and there is still a Fist sized hole in the railroad car and people may be out of their homes for up to a week. Now I don't know the cause of the 8 souls dead, but dead is dead. To me this not harmless and they didn't mention how many critters may have been killed or injured only humans doesn't sound to me as "GOOD NEWS".(Now for the good news. The chemical released was Chlorine gas. Chlorine quickly reacts with whatever is in the envirornment and becomes harmless. There will be no long term effects on the area). This sounds like a press release for the railroad and chemical industries in the WORLD which obviously have little love for. This reply is not meant to "kill" the messengers that posted this information. thx. I just pulled up some newspaper articles on this accident. First, the bad news. The chemical released was Chlorine gas. Chlorine forms a pale yellow/green cloud. It huggs the ground and kills or injures all living things. That is the reason it was used as a war gas in WWI. It produces burns to the eyes, skin and lungs. If you survive the initial effects you will have chemical pneumonia and possible long term scaring to the lungs. Now for the good news. The chemical released was Chlorine gas. Chlorine quickly reacts with whatever is in the envirornment and becomes harmless. There will be no long term effects on the area.
