Re: [RC] Graniteville train wreck. - Mary Ann Spencer
Better sanitation over the past 200 yrs has allowed
this country to progress better than others. That progress also has made
better health for all the animals. One of the primary reasons is the use
of chlorine for cleaning and sanitizing. People get sick every yr in US
due to mixing clorine with other substances and creating chlorine gas in their
homes. As with so many things, it needs to be used appropriately.
The train wreck is very unfortunate. Many
things happen that are unfortunate. There are investigations each time one
these accidents happen. Throwing the baby out with the wash water is of
not help in these situations. Finding out the facts is.
Reminds me of what they said about Agent Orange. Hey, it'll melt a
forest in a few days, but don't sweat it, it's safe to handle. Yep,
especially if you live on another planet. G.Affleck..."
Agent Orange is a completely different problem.
First, Chlorine is an element, agent orange was a mixture of ORGANIC
CHEMICALS. These chemicals were specifically designed to interfear with
the hormone system of plants. They were then checked at low levels for
effects on persons etc. No regulator expected that soldiers would bathe
in them. The next thing that happened was the US Government purchased
them from the lowest priced bidder. This low price bidder allowed a much
higher concentration of a NON ACTIVE byproduct chemical Dioxin. People
knew that Dioxin was bad news, but nobody knew about some of its effects
because a large group had not been exposed to it.
The result is that the material contaminated by a byproduct was used in a
manner inconsistent with its label. These two things produced problems,
that the army brass tried to HIDE to save its own skin.
The weed killer that was the intended component in Agent Orange is still
sold. In all states, except CA, you do not need a special license to
apply it.
Of course, you can choose to beleive that the ELEMENT CHLORINE, has not
been properly studied during the 200 or so years it has been known. You
can also choose to believe that the long term effects of its use in WWI and
the long term effects on the soldiers gassed were also not studied, but you
would be wrong.
