Re: [RC] Moon blindness - Sarah WI have a mare with moonblindness, and the research I have read does not support genetics as much as environmental factors. There is a possibility that genetics is the cause, but there is no scientific evidence to support that as a fact at this time. Evironment meaning stress, food, etc. I have also seen a writeup that indicates a mare foaling is also a possible time that moonblindness (the disease) can set in - which, ironically, is about the time my mare started having problems from what I've been told (I brought her home after the fact). Also, although Appaloosa's are more commonly seen with moonblindness, they are not more prone to it. Research and testing has shown that Appys are less prone in comparison to other breeds, such as Arabs and QHs. Appaloosasarevery prone to it, and we've put down two of our mares with it (a mother/daughter). I've never heard of it being contagious or spread environmentally! Laura "Not all who wander are lost."
