Re: [RC] I'm screaming too! - Barbara McCraryWe live on the central coast of CA. Our daffodils are blooming like mad, but the REAL harbinger of spring is the first leaf on our birch trees (ornamental, not native). Usually the first one shows up about mid-February, often on Valentine's Day. I forgot to look recently, but just for fun, when I see the first one, I'll tell on Ridecamp. Other than that, we're in the middle of a stormy period. The trails were just coming dry enough to ride and then it rained. However, I can wait for awhile for dry trails. The winter and spring rains are necessary for spring grass and it's scary to have a dry spring. We need the grass for the cows and calves. The seasons around here are marked by "firsts". The first swallow will arrive in March, three days after they come back to Mission San Juan Capistrano (for non-Californians, this is a legend, the return of the swallows to Capistrano). The first week in October, or even a little earlier, is marked by the arrival of the first Golden-Crowned Sparrow. And each month has its arrival of certain wildflowers. After what seems like an eternally long horrid deep-freeze, today we can 'almost' smell spring in the air of north central Iowa. Even with the high winds dropping the windchill temp back to the 20's, it still feels so spring-like that I'm taking off work early today to ride!! It will be weird to see MUD. What a mess the two feet of melting snow will cause, but it's a price we'll gladly pay! For those of you farther north and still suffering, hang in there. Hell has NOT frozen over, and you will eventually thaw out too. Kristi __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
