Actually, AKC doesn't do this... it's the breeders. AKC merely registers the dogs and offers many different performance titles that encourages breeders to keep the true working instincts of the breeds intact, like earthdog tests for terriers & dachshunds, herding tests for the herding dogs, hunting tests, etc.
