RE: [RC] ATTN: Folks who don't use HRMs - heidiI determined then and there that I would learn to fly by the seat of my pants BEFORE I became reliant on all those terrific instruments.Yup, and there's tons of people dead because they didn't believe the instruments. Flew right into the ground. True. But... When you are starting out, the less instruments the better, because they confuse the issue of getting to know the essence of what you're doing. Many student pilots are overwhelmed by even the minimal instruments in a trainer--and instructors work to get them to just relax and fly. As you get the feel of it, then you gradually add the instrumentation as you become sufficiently coordinated to deal with all those different things. I'm talking about rank beginnings here--and I still advise beginners to ride without gadgets. Once they get the gist of things, THEN they will benefit by adding the gadgets. But starting with the gadgetry too often detracts from learning first and foremost to listen to the horse. (Or the plane.) Perhaps my flying analogy has some flaws--and by all means if you HAVE the instruments, you need to factor them in. But if you never get comfortable with the basics, you'll never be able to make best use of the instruments/gadgets either.
