Re: [RC] What do you prefer for rain gear during a ride? - Mary Sutliff

Where do you live? What's best depends on the conditions you expect to
ride in. I know, rain but . . . . I live in wet western Washington.
We ride all winter in the rain. I have had an oilskin duster but I sold
it. When it gets wet-and it will-it's stays wet for a long time. The
final trip for me and that duster was a summer pack trip in the
Cascades. It rained, it got cold, it snowed and everything froze
including that duster. It was hard to wear in camp and impossible to
roll up when I wanted to put it in the tent or behind my saddle. It
took several days to dry out and was still wet when we got home. I next
tried a coated nylon duster and it worked pretty well. Drier, more
compact and much lighter. However, I have gone back to a Gortex rain
suit. Drier and much more versatile. Have to accept the fact that
nothing is perfect. If it rains hard enough you will get wet. This
knowledge comes from 35 years of mountain travel. Hang in there!
