[RC] electric cords and horses - Jonni JewellIf you do not have an electrician, and do not have ground fault circuit interrupters on your electric outlets for the barn etc., you can buy "portable" GFI's at Home Depot and such. They plug into the socket first, then you plug your cord into them. This is what we used for the plug for out drain hole water trough de-icer. I would not have ANY electric cords or plugs around the horses that they could get their teeth into, but if you must, this is a safety measure that may save your horses life. The GFI's detect ANY fluctuation in the current, and will pop the power off to the cord. Here is a link to just one portable GFI, so you can see what some look like. I think mine were around $10 each. We have them on the heat lamps and heated dog mats for the small critter sleeping areas, and the de-icer for the trough.
