Re: [RC] Hoping this freeze doesn't last... - Rae Callaway
It's now 67/46 for Saturday of the ride - with
30% chance of rain. Don't worry about the cold - worry about the chill of
being wet while it's chilly! Make sure you have a waterproof blanket so
that if your horse gets chilled, you've got something to cover him.
I have a gooseneck with a dressing room
that I sleep in. I use a propane heater that's tent safe. I put it
on the floor of the dressing room and keep a window open up where I'm
sleeping. Carbon monoxide is a real concern, so make sure if you use a
propane heater in your trailer, you have some fresh air somewhere near your
head. The first year of the High Roller was the first time I camped out in
cold weather - it got down to 28 that night. I had a tent, air mattress
and the heater, but no matches and I have never been so dang cold in my
life! The ride itself was great. You warm up with all the exercise
of posting and with vet checks in camp, you can have a blanket waiting for you
when you come in for the horse.
in South Texas. I'm planning to go to High Roller next weekend and
this will be my first ride in the cold on my own. We'll (me and my
horse) be 'camping' in our 2H BP, got a heater for in the trailer at night,
but I would appreciate any help/hints/ideas at all I can get for caring for
her during the ride. We're having some pretty cold weather now...of
course it could be back to 70 degrees and sunny by then, but I'd like to be
prepared either way. I know there are plenty of you out there who would
be warm in the current 30 degree weather (wind chill in the teens) that we're
having right now and I'm sure you have ideas (other than staying in camp!) on
how to manage to keep yourself and your horse going thru the ride.
