RE: [RC] hay prices in CA - Adam and Jannelle

No, we haul it out of the field usually (it is stacked on the trailer for
us in the field with a tractor) and then we unload ourselves at home. We
try to get boys to help but most of the good, realiable help is usually
already taken by the farmers. But the 75-90lb bales are ok tho I like the
75lb ones better. The 140lb alfalfa ones I just have to roll.
Fortunately, we don't get much of those. We have no way of handling 800
lb bales (sometimes called squeeze bales, I think) but we have gotten the
big round bales and without a tractor, we relied on physics...we parked so
we could roll them downhill! They were fine when we just had a few horses
but once we started in endurance and also when we had more horses (20+), it
just wasn't practical. The nutrition just wasn't as good in the round
bales as being able to bring the girls in at night and give each specific
feeds.

But I have to tell you, I hate hay season. I just am tired of hauling and
stacking hay. At least we don't have to hay it! I'm just glad I'm not my
friend who lives in Illinois and hays ALL summer herself. I just wish my
horses understood how much I must love them to haul and stack all that hay
every June!

Guess you all have it delivered so you don't have to worry about unloading
and restacking it in your barn? Those bales ARE HEAVY!!!!!!!!
 ----- Original Message -----

Our hay is about 75 lb a bale and I try to find alfalfa that is
less than 140lb. (Got 80lb bales last time...amazing). Much of the
alfalfa here is for cows, particularly dairy cows, and comes in 800+
bales!

 Hope the info helps.
