However, when I called my hoofcare speicalist, she told me to do 
much > different things. She said epson salts dry out the hoof, and
that I 
should soak in > apple cider vinegar and give Sunny Arnica and
Hpyericum (both 
homeopathics) for > pain. 

Hoofcare specialist? That's a new one on me. Try ichthammol and duct
tape. Doesn't dry out the hoof, you don't have to stand there soaking in
a bucket, and nobody will accuse you of being a flower child. >g<
Personally, I'd be wary of someone who thought it was bad to go ahead and
dig out the abcess. Letting it find its own way out means it's going to
follow the path of least resistance which may be up...or even towards the
bone. If  you wanna see something herbs won't cure try an infection next
to the coffin bone! Also...leaveing that horse with a painful abcess for
a day or two while it exits "naturally" may cause him to stand with the
majority of his weight on the other leg tell you have a lovely natural,
"rainbow shaped" bowed tendon on the "good" leg.
