Re: [RC] Fitness - Jeannie GillenMy RR just turned two in November. Have had him since he was 8 weeks..his first weekend with me was camping with the horses....as far as he is concerned, we are all related...loves to go everywhere with me, from the Westin in SFO to the PCT in the Sierras....we live adjacent Sequoia NF and 8 miles from the PCT... Your posts describe my boy perfectly....he will trot 20 miles with me...."scouting" ahead for danger...will tree a bobcat and bark off cougar and bear....then come home and sleep immediately in any warm spot...he does get cold easily, so I have a couple of jackets (an orange one during hunting season..and a horsey type one for lounging at the barn) I am always amazed at how athletic he is, and then how easily he sleeps.....works for me! I love this guy and take him everywhere with me....some hotels (the Westin) allow dogs if you sign a waiver....he sat in the lobby at my feet while I registered and everyone ooohed and awwwed him, then stood quietly in the elevator...and sat in the queen Anne chair watching animal planet, while I went to dinner......never chewed, rarely barks, doesn't even lift his leg on my hay! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chris Paus" <paus@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: "Karen Sullivan" <greymare56@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>; "Dolores Arste" <darste3@xxxxxxxxxxxx>; "Endurance list" <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, December 14, 2004 6:49 PM Subject: Re: [RC] Fitness LOL... that's my experience with my ridgeback too... she loffed to sleep on the furniture. She'd wake up to play a rousing game of fetch the stick, then come back in and sleep! chris --- Karen Sullivan <greymare56@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:Hi Dolores, Having had both Ridgebacks and a Cattle dog....I would personally choose the cattledog were I to run into Cougar or Bear. My ACD did once run a bear off when I was jogging. They will always want to go with you, are tough as nails, don't care about bad weather, etc. If they fall out of a truck, get run over by a horse trailer or get their skull stepped on by a horse, they pop back up (only kidding) The only unfortunate thing I have found about mine is that she loves heeling so much I have a very hard time with her chasing the horses..... As far as Ridgebacks, here are MY experiences. If it is raining, they want to sleep on the couch. IF you want to jog, they want to sleep on the couch. If you want to go riding, they want to sleep on the couch. If you want to hike, they want to sleep on the couch. But. they WERE bred to hunt African Lions and were extremely successful in keeping African Lions off our property. Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: Dolores Arste Hi Martina, Get a good dog to go with you. A good dog will take care of you and will deter most of the big cats. They are looking for easier targets. A Ridgeback comes to mind initially. Tough, strong and agile dogs. Not aggressive but sure look that way. But, I'm not sure where you are located. I have a cattle dog. She's not so agile anymore to be able to go out with me at speed. But, she will go out if I walk.===== "A good horse makes short miles," George Eliot Chris and Star BayRab Acres http://pages.prodigy.net/paus =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
