RE: [RC] Tie Ups - StephTeeterDrin - I'm curious, hope you don't mind my questions. How much riding/conditioning did you do with Ruffy after the 3-day ride? What was the travel to the ride like? Any difference? I wonder if the cooler weather for the October 100 mile ride had anything to do with it- I think there were at least 2 tie-ups at this ride. And more metabolic problems in general than the August 100. (Drin's horse Ruffy received overall Best Condition on the Owyhee High Country 3-day ride in August - not a fast pace on any of the days, but the horse looked fantastic at the end of the 3 days. ) The ride where she tied up was 6 weeks after the 3-day I think. Plenty of time for rest. Sometimes it seems like the fitter they are, the greater the risk of tie up. I have never (luckily) had a= horse 'tie up', and was wondering what the symptoms are (ie how= do you tell the horse is officially 'tied up' and not just lame= from an injury)?? (Lauretta and Shaba, who is incredibly forgiving of his= mom's shortcomings and lack of horse knowledge) " Well in my case I started the ride with a well warmed up horse , walked and jog trotted for about 1/8th of a mile on a gravel road then stopped with about 6 other riders as one rider had to get off of her horse because of a stirrup problem , we then continued on for about another 1/2 mile and turned up a sandy wash again at about a 6 mile an hour pace , walked up a small hill to the top of the wash and then started trotting along at about 8 mph which was going to be my steady pace for the days ride . Ruffy trotted along at that pace with me holding her in but then she backed off and held that pace on a loose rein which got me taking inventory , her pulse was good , but she was not paying any attention to the other horses passing us . I dropped my reins and she just stopped , stepped off her and her eyes were telling the story , they were filled with pain . The minute I stepped off her it looked like someone had turned a garden hose on her as water started running off her and she had some foam between her hind legs and on her neck . I let her stand for a couple minutes and then assessed my situation , I was at about 4 miles out and needed to get her back to camp the way we came as a truck and trailer was not going to make it to us that way and I was not sure if help would come and if it did how long a trailer ride we would have to get her out . I turned her around and started walking her slowly as she was taking baby steps with her hind legs and her butt muscles were as hard as rocks . We would walk about 1/4 mile then stop and rest and do it again , at about 2 miles from the gravel road the ride manager came (thank god) and went for help as another rider had his horse tie up about 7 miles into the ride but next to a highway and while the RM was talking to him other riders had told him I was in need of help . One of the vets met me in the wash with a 4 wheeler and administered banamine and by the time we got to the gravel a trailer was there and ready to get us to camp . I rode with her holding her head steady as the banamine really took effect fast , the vets had the bags hung and ready as soon as we unloaded . This is how Ruffys tie up went and how I handled it , I am sure all situations are not the same . I was lucky as no permanent damage was done to my mare and the ride managers had everything in order "just in case" an emergency occured and were well prepared .
