Re: [RC] A Panacur question not asked yet? - heidiIn theory, if horses are on daily wormer, and daily wormer kills small and large strongyles at their first and last stages, then is it true you don't need to purge because they never get encysted? A vet I used to use was trying to get me to spend $140 per horse (times 21) to purge. I asked him this question and he paused and quietly answered "Well, yes." Sandra Well.....no. First off, unless the horses have ALWAYS been on a daily dewormer (or have had a good program), you have no way of knowing WHAT they have in terms of encysted worms. And if they have a big load, only a certain amount of them will continue to mature, and come into the gut, where the daily dewormer will get them. So to just start on a daily dewormer without knowing their history could mean a LOOONG time before you get the encysted ones matured and moved out. Meanwhile, all the damage of them moving into the gut continues to occur. Second, although reports are anecdotal, many of us have seen problems that seem to be associated with the daily dewormer in endurance horses, and don't want to use them. They're great for broodmares, foals, younguns, etc. But a lot of us don't want our horses on ANY sort of dewormer close to ride time. Third, $140 per horse??? Wow! A bottle of Safeguard will purge roughly four adult horses, and costs under $110. So try more like $27-$28 per horse, and less if they are younguns or small.
