Re: [RC] To Bit or Not to Bit???? what do you think - Robin & Mary-Anne Dorchester
Hi Sally,
We did all the usual things, had his teeth floated,
went back to the arena, measured the interdental space and bought bigger and
small diameter bits etc. After all of that failed, we finally decided to
stick our hands in the horse's mouth and have a feel at the other structures,
not just his teeth. It turns out that this horse has a very shallow palate
and with a single jointed snaffle when I would pick up on the reins the bit
would bend and the joint would poke him in the roof of his mouth, he'd throw his
head up.....you get the idea. I went to a French link snaffle (2 joints) and
he's fine with it. This horse is an Arab but he's big and not terribly
refined, big head for an Arab and we just never guessed his mouth would be
so....dainty <g>.

Bit???? what do you think

figured out the problem, bought a bit that worked and the horse goes fine in
it. "
What was the problem and which
bit did you buy to fix it?
I have a mare that goes both
ways, sometimes she hates the bit and other times she does not care. Her
problem is not her teeth. I bought a gelding that was a bad head shaker, it
turned out he had bad TMJ pain. I found a fancy "tooth farrier" and got
the problem fixed.....he may revert to type ocassionally, like when he wants
to get moving at a stop, but mostly he is fine.
