Re: [RC] To Bit or Not to Bit???? what do you think - Robin & Mary-Anne Dorchester

Hi Alice,

My bitless bridle (this is my terminology) is a modified sidepull.  I actually have 2, one leather and one biothane, same design.  The nose piece is just a flat piece of leather or biothane whereas in traditional sidepulls the noseband is usually rawhide. The reins attach to the side rings on the noseband.

The one I call Paddi's version of the Spirit Bridle has the rein that runs up over the poll, then crosses under the horses jaw and then runs out through the side rings on the noseband.  I hope this isn't too confusing.

I have looked at the spirit bridle site. I've owned a bitless bridle. What's the difference between the two?  why are they in such a dispute with each other (and no, I didn't check the archives to see if this is old news, so bear with me)

sometimes I ride with Paddi's version of the Spirit bridle or bitless bridle, sometimes I ride with a bit and sometimes I ride with a rope halter (same horse).
