One year when I lived in Maryland, we had gotten a blizzard every other weekend for 6 weeks. Lots of snow, packed down between blizzards. Previously, I had tried training my LD horse to cart and harness, but he wasn't very thrilled by the idea. Once we had all that snow, though, I put on his harness and a bareback pad, and brought my cross-country skis to the boarding stable. One of us would ride (and steer) and someone else would wear the skis and hang onto the harness (where it normally attaches to the cart). We took turns doing this all afternoon, and my horse had a good time too!
