Maybe it's because the hoof is numb? Where do you get the idea that a shod hoof is numb? Kahlil ran for several years early in his career with no pads (iron shoes). Then he got a stone bruise on a ride (with his iron shoes on) and we had to pull. After that, I would shoe him with full plastic pads under the iron shoes for rocky rides, and all major rides -- then cut out the pad after the ride leaving a rimpad until his next shoeing. That worked very well for us. He ended up going 18 ride seasons and 11,525 miles, every mile of it in iron shoes -- and his hooves were never numb! Today at 31 years old his hooves are still in great shape (although now that he is unshod -- since we don't ride him any more -- he is a little "ouchy" trotting over gravel). Uh, wait, not quite "every mile." I'm always looking for better ways to do things, and we did try plastic shoes a couple of times ... but they didn't work for us. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxx http://www.rnbw.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
