I have a Singer 401A, which is the last Singer made with STEEL gears. 
(ca 1960) I bought it used for about $400, and consider it money well 
spent.  I have paid for it many times over, just in blanket repairs!

Try the sewing machine places around you locally, as well as the usual, 
ie:  Ebay, etc.
