Hello Dawn--
I have read a little bit about the australian stock horse, and they do sound
sturdy. I would be very concerned about encouraging this young man, whom you
said was a newbie to endurance, to get his 150 qualifying miles and then show
up for Tevis. IMHO that could be a recipe for disaster. A horse needs time for
his harder tissues to adapt to progressive training befor safely attempting a
ride as challenging as Tevis. The rider himself needs some experience with the
exertion of such a ride, including sleep deprivation, heat, night riding,
dehydration, etc.,. I have been to Tevis four times, and though my wife sports
a buckle, I still hold my pants up with suspenders. Oh well, maybe next year...
