Re: [RC] RC] competing gaited horses - M. Paul Latiolais

Mike,

It depends on the ride and whether we are trying to top 10 or not.

BUT mostly we "gait" at his fastest 4-beat speed, which is a little over 9 mph. We cantor some and walk some. The amount of cantoring depends on our goals. We generally "gait" downhill and walk uphill. On the 50's, it has been mostly in-gait with some cantoring on the flat.

My wife has joined me for our last three rides, which has encouraged me to slow down and we have only been doing LD's. Now that she has discovered how much fun a nice cantor can be, that may change. She is also talking about doing 50's, which surprises me. Until recently, she was always a fair weather rider.

My paso, Pete, is not yet competitive on the fifties, but he tore up the LD's last year.

I will continue to do slow 50's and LD's for another season, before I see what he can do, if then. Or maybe we will start doing 75's.
