[RC] re: 100 milers...speed vs. tradition - Cindy CollinsSteph said: p.s. the rider that won the trailer at Arabian Nights was a 'plain old AERC' rider. (not FEI). How many of you remember that the ROC used to have a horse trailer for the first to finish?? Things aren't really that different now. Steph, you are certainly a rider I admire and a rider who has success at all types of rides. Karen Kroon, the winner of the Arabian Nights ride (and B.C.) is one of the finest riders ever to come out of the Mountain region, so I'm not at all surprised by her success. I am in awe of horses that can run 7-9 hour 100 milers consistently and stay sound (if that's really possible, year after year). However, it is a different sport from the classic 100 mile ride that was developed over tough terrain. The ROC was very different from the current trend. It was put over the toughest trails in the country, like the Big Horn. There was no flat track racing with the ROC. Don't think that I've never gone fast over flat courses...If you want to study my record, you'll see that I've done three hour 50s and, I think, a 9 hour 100. But, I was a lot younger and, I feel, more foolish. I don't know if I'd ever want to do that again. I know now how "on the edge" that speed takes a horse. I truly believe that there is a division in philosophy between folks that do FEI and those of us that got into this sport to get away from that type of hype and rules. It doesn't mean one is wrong, but that most of us are not attracted to both. You are an exception. Just my two cents.
