I had that happen just a few hundred yards from the finish in an LD! 
My horse stayed relaxed and under control, but I can't imagine what 
those people were thinking --  unless they just wanted to beat me out 
of the turtle award (which they did -- my horse walked in at criteria 
and we got our finish time, whereas the "racers" took 10 more minutes 
to pulse down and get their finish time <g>).
