We are going to use a metal
building with some changes (higher pitch roof, home style window/doors, etc) to
avoid an industrial/commercial look. You can keep the cost per
square foot relatively low that way (ours is figuring out at aprox.
$10/sq.ft). Then you have to finish out the inside, and that could
be as little or as much as you want to spend. Also, we will
have a separate hay/shaving building. With having a steel building
and only minimum hay and shavings in the building, the chance of fire should be
pretty low. Plus I like the idea of it being "clear span" and your
not limited by posts in the wrong places ( like arena ).
We are building the living area
next to the stalls, not above. We will have a tack/boot room in
between the living area and barn, and thought this would help with the fly/smell
problem. However, if you build above the stall area it would
probably be more economical.

What would such a thing cost and

Evidently not. I don't
know since I didn't get to do it, but I think it would be OK. However, this is
one of the reasons my ex didn't want to do it. In KY I could have had the
Amish build the shell for next to nothing and then finished the house. Our
original plans were to do everything in cash and if we'd been able to do the
barn house we would have only had to borrow about 10K for our project. It
would have been nice :-)
