Re: [RC] Gaited horses-downhll - heidiI don't care how balanced anyone claims their horses to be. For personal safety I have decided that I don't like to run my horses down steep descents. No matter how balanced you think your horse is, gravity can take over fast when/if your horse trips. I'd rather be walking and in control when it happens. I'll admit that is my one and only fear on a horse...tripping downhill. Well, I don't care to RUN downhill, either--and a canter or gallop is NOT a particularly well-balanced gait for downhill work. That said--what I've found with horses who DO go downhill with good balance is that when they trip, they trip in the hind end. Accidents can happen at speed on the flat as well. And certainly no one should travel at a gait or speed at which they do not feel their horse is safe and in control. The feeling of security on a good downhill horse is simply something that is impossible to describe to anyone who has not ridden such a horse and felt it, I guess.
