Re: [RC] RC] competing gaited horses - Peter HarperDeb, I think it has more to doe with the individual horse and conditioning than it has to do with gaited vs non-gaited. I have a TWH mare and ride with two friends on Arabs. We all have heart rate monitors and this summer we did a training ride were we would call out the heart rate as we rode. We would take them up to about 150bpm at a canter for about five minutes and the slow down to a trot or a running walk in our case until their rate recovered to under 100bpm. Over a 12 mile ride we were all within 5-10bpm of each other. Sometimes one of the Arabs would recover first and some times my Walker would. The speed that the Arab had the advantage was at the top end of their trot. This speed is too fast for my walkers running walk and she would have to do a slow canter to keep up. Our heart rate was a little higher at this pace. This would be an advantage if you were going for Top Ten. If you're a middle of the packer like me this isn't too big a disadvantage.
