Re: [RC] Endurance Vs. CRT - Kristen A Fisher

Yes, Chris, that does help. It took me a while to realize the "in time" is *only* used to ensure you meet criteria within 30 mins of that time; it is the time you hit criteria that stops your ride time and hold time starts. Thus you want to minimize the difference between the in time and the time criteria was met ;-)

I believe that a pulse into a hold and gate into a
hold are two ways to say the same thing.

In the Central Region, when the horse and rider come
into the VC, first they go past the timers who give
them an "in time." Then they go to the pulse takers
who give them a pulse time when the horse meets
criteria. This is the gate or pulse into the hold. The
horse's official hold period starts when the critieria
is met.

For example, if you come in at 10:10 a.m. and your
horse pulses down at 10:15, then, 10:15 is when your
hold time starts, however long the vet set the holds
for. If your horse doesn't pulse down until 10:20 or
10:25, that's when your hold time starts. Thus it
behooves you to take care of your horse and help him
pulse down quickly. The clock doesn't start ticking on
your hold until the horse meets pulse criteria.

A regular hold is similar to CTR in that when you come in to the VC, you have a hold time starting with your intime. If you come in at 10:10, your hold time starts at 10:10. Sometime during that hold period, your horse must meet pulse criteria. In CTR, your horse is given 10 minutes to meet criteria, but you really want his pulse to be better than criteria, because criteria, such a 64 bpm, is the pint at which he just barely made it! In MOTDRA CTR, you lose points for any pulse over 44 bpm. If your horse doesn't meet criteria in the first 10 minutes, you get another 10. If he doesn't meet it then, your horse can be pulled. All this is going on while the clock is ticking on your hold time.

Hope this helps.

At the rides I have been, your hold time starts when
you meet pulse criteria.

Some vets still actually have regular holds instead of pulse into a hold. You have a set time for a hold and you can meet p/r criteria any time during that hold. Luckily, most do the gate into hold now.....
