My first horse, a Standardbred mare, came to me at age 10, never been 
ridden but had been raced as a youngster, so was handled a lot.  She 
had never been ridden but took everything in stride (much to the 
surprise of our farrier at the time).  Although distance riding was a 
bit much for her, she was a great horse for me for several years (she's 
now a pasture ornament).
