Re: [RC] Skin Problems - SOWrightI agree that Diane's horse may have a fungus. However, the extent of the fungus may point to an underlying systemic infection. Our geriatric Foxtrotter mare (who is a black & white Tobiano) had the same problem in July. I treated her topically with all sorts of fungicides, betadine baths, etc. But the fungus continued to pop up in new places on her body. I finally had the vet out and he prescribed a sulfa antibiotic for the infection. The antibiotic is what did the trick. He also gave me some ointment to treat topically, but the little tubes only lasted 2 days, because there were so many affected areas! I made a betadine and water treatment in a spray bottle and sprayed the fungus spots twice daily, in addition to the oral antibiotics. The vet also instructed me to keep our mare out of dewey grass until she recovered, or she'd get infected again. So, we only let her out to pasture from noon until before dark. I kept her in a stall at night, where I could control the conditions.
