Consider Siskiyou County (bisected by the I-5 and on the border of Oregon).
Siskiyou is one of the biggest counties in California, still very rural and
one of the most ecologically diverse regions in the country.  All kinds of
riding opportunities all over the county.  Land is still very, very
reasonable.  I saw an ad recently for 5 acres bordered on two sides by
government land leased for logging (usually no problem to ride there) for
$89,000.  I can't find the ad right now but it may have included a
manufactured home.  Weather is generally mild, but with four distinct
seasons.  Very, very horse friendly.  Can't go anywhere without seeing
several horse trailers on the road.

Hi,
I am shopping for horse property in the foothills around Sacramento.  I
would like at least 5 acres usable, and would like an arena (so it needs to
be fairly flat).  I also want to be close to dedicated trails or open space
in a safe neighborhood.  I have looked around Grass Valley and Cool, but
have not found anything yet.  I am planning on heading back up there to
check around Placerville/Shingle Springs, etc.  Any suggestions or comments
