RE: [RC] [RC] [RC] My horse choked on beet pulp - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: Nicole z_arabs@xxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== It's too bad no one told you about shredded (loose) beet pulp. There is no need to mess soaking (or choking). Just pour an equal amount of water over the shredded beet pulp at the time of feeding and stir. Agreed. I feed a lot of beet pulp, and I prefer the pellets. But, given how HARD those suckers are I would not feed them unsoaked. I'd guess all the "don't need to soak" folks are probably not feeding the pellets. Those pellets aren't like hay pellets, they're a LOT harder, and some horses will choke on hay pellets. The shreds? No problem feeding those unsoaked. I just prefer the pellets, especially since I can buy a brand that claims to have no molasses in it, unlike the shreds that all have molasses. And for my one horse who can't have sugar, but really needs/benefits from beet pulp I can rinse and drain to be 100% sure she's not getting any molasses/sugar. My sympathies to the owner of the horse that choked. I've been there; I had a colt that choked the first time as a weanling (on hay). The second or third time he choked he was out of my care and he ended up with un-diagnosed/un-treated pnumonia (I'm not clear what happened exactly) and ended up being put down due to the extensive lung damage he suffered. The choke didn't kill him, but it did lead to the situation that did. :( ~Nicole =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
