Re: [RC] UAE Culture - Joe LongThe U.S. boycott of the 1980 Olympics was not comparable to the situation under discussion, but I was flabbergasted to read this: On Wed, 27 Oct 2004 20:32:53 EDT, RBluebirdpr@xxxxxxx wrote: Was the United States a Laughingstock when we boycotted the Olympics??? I don't recall that we were. Hmmm, I recall that we were, yes. What a wimpish response to an armed invasion. In fact I think most Americans were right proud that we stood up to the Commies. "Stood up?" All our boycott achieved was to further politicize the Olympics (which are supposed to be above politics), deny our athletes the opportunities they'd trained for for years, and provoke a Soviet retaliatory boycott of the 1984 Los Angeles games. And the decision was made unilaterally by the President and imposed on the athletes, they were never consulted. I was frankly ashamed of that action. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxx http://www.rnbw.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
