Maryben, that had something to do with it--but that isn't the whole story,
either.  One tended to remember them because they HAD been in the ride
results all year.  One was aware of people who weren't even from one's own
region--I still remember the accomplishments of folks clear across the
country like Joe Long (who never finished #1 but who probably had more #2
finishes than anybody) and Nina Warren that I didn't get to know until
after they had already been "up there"--they competed enough that folks
talked about them and their horses, and respected their accomplishments.
