[RC] resting heartbeat - rides2farLots of things can affect it. You putting a stethoscope up to her may affect it. Taking her away from her pal to the saddling area would raise it. Eating raises it. When my Arab was just getting started his heart rate was 20 beats higher when traveling in the lead on the trail, let another horse pass him and it dropped immediately. I call it the "he'll get eaten first" affect. Kaboot's pulse is often lower at the third vet check than at vet in simply because he thinks it's all exciting and by the 3rd check he's starting to settle down to business. I wouldn't give up on her for one reading. Angie On Sun, 24 Oct 2004 16:36:44 -0700 "Mary Orosz" <mary@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> writes: I have a question about my horses resting heartbeat. I have a TWH with a resting rate of 44. He is heavily muscled, and needs to lose 150 lbs - an extremely easy keeper. I trail ride him a lot around home. I didn't plan on using him as my endurance horse. A year ago I got a 5 year old mustang. She was probably the perfect weight when I got her. She was green and I really enjoyed my TWH so her training was a hit and miss thing. I started letting them have 24/7 pasture access this summer and she picked up a little weight. I started riding her lately and love her gaits - so comfy! I have been having a hard time hearing her heartbeat with the stethoscope so I wasn't sure what her resting heartbeat was. I just used a monitor on her and found that her resting heartbeat was 49-50. I haven't had the weather to get her out and see what it is when she is working, but will be going out today to see how she does. Should I just forget about using her for endurance? Do you thing it might go down as she gets conditioned and loses weight? I was just planning on having a good time - not racing. Thanks for the advice, Mary The bigger they are, the farther you fall. ________________________________________________________________ Speed up your surfing with Juno SpeedBand.
