[RC] leg wraps - k s swigart

Again, inquiring minds want to know the science behing
a clay poultice....how can it remove heat? Especially if
all trussed up with plastic or paper......?

The science behind clay poultice is that it removes fluid (thereby
"tightening" the skin, making it less elastic and less able for fluid to
pool in the legs), not that it removes heat.

This drying effect is negated if you wrap the poultice in plastic (since
it can't dry). If you wrap the poultice in plastic you will be
increasing heat, not reducing it. This is properly called a "sweat,"
and there are some situations where it is appropriate to sweat your
horse's leg/s.
