In the Midwest, where most people do both endurance and CTR, people buying out of shape prospects look for 40 or below resting heart rate if they are planning to do CTR. The reason is that with proper training etc. they will have a CTR horse that always comes in with a 40 or perhaps on a very hot day a 44 pulse at the 10 minute checks. Such horses are needed to get enough blue ribbons to win the year end. Has anyone ever heard what Secretariat's resting pulse was?
