Actually, since I started doing endurance I've taught all my horses *not* to pick up their foot the second I reach down. I want to be able to feel of their legs for heat, wrap, put on shipping boots or whatever without the horse picking up his foot every time I reach down. I always give a verbal command when I want them to lift it. Guess I started out harassing them along with a verbal cue, then just the cue. If I don't give the verbal cue I ask them to leave it down. I also spend time getting them used to having their suspensories & tendons palpated, so liked the idea of stroking the tendon area. If they aren't used to it at a ride and yank away how can a vet tell if they've really got sore supensories? For an update: Asked the new horse to pick up his rear foot with my hand instead of the rope tonight. Took Kat's advice and didn't make an effort to hold the foot. Liked that advice cause it was easy. :-) He handled it well. No swipe kick, just lifted it really high and put it right back. Good enough for now I guess. I'm sure I'll use everyone's advice a little and appreciate it all. Angie ________________________________________________________________ Speed up your surfing with Juno SpeedBand.
