Re: [RC] Handling the Horse & Shoes - rides2far\> 1. My fear is getting her to an event and not being able to work with her rear hooves. Our vets tend to be pretty adaptable to situations. Someone told me once that Otis Schmitt looked at a kicking mule from a distance and declared its temperature to be normal. >g< When you go work that ride, ask them if they'll forgive you for bringing one they can't handle...if you promise to be working on it for later. What area are you in and where do you plan to do your first ride? Practically any horse could do Liberty or Hahira barefoot but Dawson Forest or Longstreet's Charge are darned good places to have shoes on. I did a 50 for my first ride, but I'd read everything available and trained a lot with some people who'd competed before. I think Amy Whelen did a 100 on her 2nd ride, but she was more ready than most of us were after years of competing so it's all relative. If you've been training and reading I wouldn't go any lower than a 25. You'd be done with a 15 in an hour and a half and then what? 15 is a good place maybe to just let someone who's been showing or something like that try distance riding but if you've got any experience at all you should be able to do 25.
